Walsh Bay is one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects on 17 hectares of prime harbourside real estate.
Walsh Bay is considered to be one of the most awarded developments in Australia’s history, with approximately 60 national and international industry awards. Part of this Sydney development was the refurbishment of an 85-year-old timber wharf into modern, commercial office space for Wharves 8/9. This involved repiling the wharf under the existing columns and heritage timber superstructure and achieving a substructure with a 100 year design life to support the building. A structural-steel hydrostatic “floating” plant room was also constructed within the tidal zone.
Robert Bird Groups involvement in Pier 6/7 involved the design and construction of the substructure works for the pier and shore apartments. This included a 200m x 40m basement car park within the inter-tidal zone of Sydney Harbour. A unique construction methodology was developed and adopted to simplify the construction in the marine environment.
