Nick Barker

Nick graduated from the University of Queensland in 1981 and has worked for several leading consulting engineering companies since that time, gaining broad experience in the planning, design and construction of buildings. Through Nick’s experiences, he established the Infrastructure Group of Robert Bird Group.

Nick’s over 30 years of experience and long-term passion for developing construction solutions for major building and infrastructure projects has become the foundation of the Infrastructure Group and the specialist engineering services that are provided by this group.

Nick also has had a long standing belief in the value of three dimensional modelling of buildings and structures, and in 2009, he set up within Robert Bird Group the highly skilled ExViz visualisation team. Nick’s expertise extends across the built environment into the Property, Infrastructure, Mining and Resources.

John Ward

John graduated from the Queensland University of Technology in 1998 and joined RBG in the Brisbane and Sydney offices where he was involved in a wide variety of structural projects.  These included residential apartment buildings, wharf structures, commercial buildings and heritage structures.

John has worked in the London office since 2003 where he has worked in lead roles on a range of major projects including the St Pancreas terminus of the CTRL, Westfield London and the London Athletes Village.

In 2010, John established the Advanced Technical Services division, a group applying modern analytical technology to a range of complex engineering problems. Capabilities of the group include detailed analysis of structural and geotechnical situations using non-linear FE analysis, assessment of structural dynamics including floor, bridge and grandstand vibration, blast analysis of civil infrastructure, tidal energy devices and construction stage analysis of major projects (including the Shard of Glass jump start).

John leads the Advanced Technical Services team, delivering solutions to complex, technically demanding engineering and construction problems by applying leading edge analysis and design techniques.

Stephen Morley

Stephen has achieved international acclaim in the past twenty-three years, applying innovation and artistry to Structural Design Engineering in his lead design roles.

Some iconic projects include Wembley Stadium with Stephen as Director of Structural Design, Structural Concept Designer of the Gold Medal Award Winning Stadium Australia (and contribution to the Architectural form of the Roof) and Specialist Consultant to Buro Happold for Concept Design of the Ascot Racecourse redevelopment as well as approximately twenty other stadiums, arenas and convention centres worldwide.

Stephen has incorporated his skill as an artist with structural engineering and is referred to as one of the most innovative architectural-engineers in long span structures. Stephen Morley’s international reputation as a specialist in Stadia and long span structures throughout the world culminated in his appointment in 2003 as Advisor on Structures to the IOC on Athens and Specialist Adviser on Venues to the London 2012 Olympic Delivery Partner in 2006.

Stephen Lester

Stephen Lester graduated in 1996 and has worked on a variety of projects across Australia, Asia and Europe including the Infrastructure, Aviation, Transportation, and Remediation & Waste sectors.

Stephen completed a Masters Degree in Multimedia in 2006 and has since used this knowledge to help build a Visualisation team within Robert Bird Group called ExViz which he currently manages.  ExViz produces technically accurate 3D models and visualisations of engineering projects specialising in those of a more complex nature.

Dylan Walmsley

Dylan Walmsley joined the Robert Bird Group in 2002, following the completion of a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree.
During his time at Robert Bird Group, Dylan has demonstrated strong capabilities in the design of temporary works and construction equipment installation design (particularly Tower Cranes, Mobile Cranes and Hoists), and his involvement in many key and large-scale temporary works projects has seen his skills develop further.
Dylan has an aptitude to develop quality solutions to design challenges that are well considered to ensure the client benefits in terms of time and / or budget.
Dylan is also involved in the mentoring and training of junior engineers within the company, sharing his knowledge of temporary works and encouraging lateral and creative thinking to solve design challenges.

John Bambino

John graduated from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1991 and began work with Robert Bird Group in 2002 after 10 years of private industry structural consulting experience. Over the past 24 years John has worked on a variety of building projects ranging from $1mil to over $1billion in total project value, including medium to high-rise residential projects up to 108 storey’s, specialised modular apartment systems, such as Unitised Building and CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), commercial, retail, recreational, health, industrial, R&D, educational and government projects with extensive experience in the design, management and onsite supervision. In 2006 John became a Structures Principal of Robert Bird Group’s Victorian operations and was appointed to the position of Victorian General Manager in July 2012. John strives to achieve the best outcome for clients and works collaboratively with the client project team and builders embracing and promoting the companies embedded ethos of thinking ‘Beyond the Square’. John has also managed the following major project bids and concept designs:

Joseph graduated in 2000 from the University of Melbourne and joined RBG in 2007. During his professional career, Joseph has been involved in a diverse range of projects in both Australia and overseas including residential,
commercial, retail, health and industrial projects. Joseph brings an analytical yet practical approach to problem solving drawing on extensive experience in both manual and computer aided design of structures.

Simon Cloherty

Simon has over 18 years structural design experience gained through projects in a number of countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the UAE. Simon’s experience covers various sectors, including commercial, residential, retail, institutional, heritage, general industrial and mining.

Simon’s expertise is in the design of tall and super tall buildings, the design of deep basement excavations and developing solutions to complex structural engineering challenges.  Simon has worked alongside a number of internationally recognized consultants across all disciplines and is able to communicate effectively at all levels to help build collaborative and efficient project design teams.

Terry Raggett

Terry joined Robert Bird Group in 2005 and has worked across most of the projects in the London office.  He has been directly involved with both conceptual and detailed engineering design throughout his career and has applied his knowledge through a holistic design approach that embraces all of the project team’s activities and aspirations, and that is responsive to environmental issues. 

Terry has a passion for the integration of engineering with architecture and is actively involved in exploring new techniques and ideas through both the industry and academic institutions.

Paul Mullet

Following graduation from the University of Southampton in 1995, Paul joined Gifford where he spent several years working on large scale civil engineering projects undertaking design and analysis activities. With a growing interest in structural analysis, Paul took an opportunity to work in a specialist support team providing analytical and engineering consultancy to both internal design teams and external clients directly.

In this role, Paul worked on a range of technically challenging projects, spanning across various market sectors and technical disciplines. In 2009, Paul returned to the UK to act as the manager of the Advanced Engineering Group at Gifford. In this practice-wide role Paul worked to improve the range and integration of advanced engineering capabilities across disciplines and geographic locations including the development and application of advanced numerical analysis (FEA and CFD), advanced geometry modelling, laser scan (point cloud) processing, design process development and best practice design guidance.

Paul joined Robert Bird Group in 2010 and currently works as the technical manager in the RBG Dubai Office, providing support to technical staff and managing technically challenging work packages for both internal and external clients.

Simon Nicholas

Simon joined Robert Bird Group in 2009 as part of the Construction Engineering team, where he worked on The Shard and Cannon Place projects. He also led the development of an innovative Modular Construction project. In 2010, Simon moved into the Building Structures team, and led the design and delivery of the 153,000m2 Caprice Gold Hotel in Istanbul. Now a director within the team and general manager for ISAC, he has been involved in leading teams for the 14-storey Nova Victoria residential building, the 37-storey residential development at Elephant and Castle, and the 235-apartment first phase of the Heygate Estate Regeneration scheme.
