What Is Engineering?
Imagine a house you would like to build, or a bridge you would like to create across a river. Now that you've imagined it, the question is how would you actually build it? How could the walls stay up in your house? How could the bridge support all the weight of the cars and trucks that might be on it?
Engineering answers those kinds of questions. The professional engineer takes ideas and figures out how to make them work in real life.
The dictionary defines it this way: Engineering applies scientific and technical knowledge to solve human problems. Engineers use imagination, judgement, reasoning and experience to apply science, technology, mathematics, and practical experience. The result is the design, production, and operation of useful objects or processes.
There are many different areas of specialty in engineering. At Robert Bird Group, we specialise primarily in structural and civil engineering.
