• Russell Whitehead Director, Building Structures Division Lead

    Russell is a Director for Robert Bird Group, who leads the building structures discipline in the London office, overseeing the operations of our five buildings teams and directing design projects.

    Since joining Robert Bird in 2010, he has taken a leading role in our London buildings project portfolio, particularly in the commercial sector. This includes delivery of the 100 Bishopsgate tower over a period of nine years, leading the scheme design for 1 Leadenhall tower, and spearheading the conceptual design of several early stage office buildings in central London with some of the world’s leading architects. With much experience in these deep basement and tall building projects, he embraces fully the principle of integrating the design of permanent structures with detailed consideration of construction sequence and methodology, to produce outcomes that are best for the project.

    Other highlights include directing the overnight jacking of the cast iron and glass Floral Hall on to new supports at the Royal Opera House, opening up the space under for a new entrance foyer, all without breaking a single window.

    As well as mentoring and supporting the development of engineers within the business, Russell carries out chartership professional reviews, living the company’s commitment to bringing through the next generation of engineers across the industry. He has been a chartered engineer with the Institution of Structural Engineers for ten years.
