Two wins at Urban Taskforce Australia Design Development Excellence Awards!

Rounding 2021 off on a positive note, two RBG projects have won awards in multiple categories at the Urban Taskforce Australia Design Development Excellence Awards 2021.

Crown Sydney –  Development of the Year 2020

At over 270m in height, this six-star GreenStar-rated 75-storey tower is the tallest building in Sydney. Crown Sydney’s unique shape, location and spectacular views has transformed a previously disused wharf and container storage facility into an iconic focal point of Sydney Harbour. Robert Bird Group’s innovative solutions overcame the structural challenges of creating this building’s twisting sculptural form. These solutions included “Helical” columns that twist and bulge around the perimeter of the building to achieve the structure’s desired geometry, and walking columns to manage differential axial shortening between internal and external columns. The incorporation of a “tuned mass damper” to control accelerations and maintain the building’s elegant slender profile was another RBG engineering initiative.

Greenland Australia – High-rise residential development city Award
Robert Bird Group was commissioned by the developer of this prestigious residential tower in the Sydney CBD to provide structural permanent works value engineering, construction methodology, demolition works sequencing, and temporary works engineering services for the project. The unique engineering challenges that RBG solved included the temporary retention of an existing 26-level-tall structural steel frame, whilst the existing façade and floors are demolished.  RBG worked with the contractor to develop a detailed demolition and reconstruction sequence which adequately addressed the site access, limitations of the capacity of the existing 50-year-old structure and coordination of all temporary works installation and removal with permanent works. We also provided shoring and retention design for the existing basement, and underpinning and stabilizing works design for the existing tower whilst new foundations up to 5 metres deep were constructed to support the 67-level permanent works. Basement retention included an interface with the future Sydney Metro rail corridor on Pitt Street.

Congratulations to our clients Crown Resorts Limited and Greenland (Australia) Investment Pty Limited, and to all of those involved in bringing these projects to completion.
