The Salkhit Wind Farm is located approximately 70km south of the capital city Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It is the country’s first wind farm, with a total power production of 50MW, which was 5% of Mongolia’s current energy requirement.
Robert Bird Group’s role on the project included Structural design consultant to the Contractor, responsible design of turbine footings, and Construction Phase Support. Some of the key challenges faced during the project were the extreme temperatures Mongolia endured. Placing concrete at ambient air temperatures as low as -18 °C required heating, reinforcement overnight prior to pouring and providing thermal blankets and protection post pour.
The remote location also provided Construction Phase challenges, particularly for sourcing of construction materials which were overcome for the successful delivery of this project.
