We are proud to share that 21 Moorfields, a landmark commercial development in the heart of London, has received a Structural Steel Design Award 2025.
This recognition celebrates the project’s exceptional structural engineering, delivered by Robert Bird Group, in collaboration with Wilkinson Eyre (architect), Williams Hare Limited (steelwork contractor), and Sir Robert McAlpine (main contractor), for client Landsec.
Engineering excellence above a live rail interchange
Located above a live rail interchange in the heart of London, this commercial development posed extraordinary engineering challenges and delivered a globally significant solution.
With only 16 available pile locations, the structure is supported by a bridging system that spans the entire width of the station box. The result is an elegant, high-performance design that conceals immense complexity.
The judges praised the project as “a project of global significance with an immensely challenging site above the operational rail interchange and new station box. The elegant solution underplays the complexity involved in the design and set a new benchmark”.
A benchmark for over-station development
This award highlights the ingenuity, collaboration, and precision required to deliver a project of this scale and complexity. It also reinforces Robert Bird Group’s commitment to engineering excellence, urban integration, and innovative structural solutions in challenging environments.
We extend our congratulations to all partners involved and thank the BCSA and Steel for Life for this honour.Read more about our work at 21 Moorfields here: https://brnw.ch/21wWXRM
