Waihopai Bridge

Project Description
Severe flooding in 2021 resulted in the Waihopai Valley Bridge being washed away,
removing a key piece of rural infrastructure. Egypt Civil Construction were appointed to
build a replacement bridge, comprising 6 spans over a rapidly flowing mountain river.

Project Challenges
To build the hammerhead headstocks safely and efficiently, without reliance on scaffold
towers in the flood plain, it was necessary to develop a modular suspended falsework
system and working platform that could be supported from each single pier.

Added Value
RBG designed clamped falsework, sequentially fixed to each pier using pre-tensioned
rods, on top of which modular steelwork and timber framing afforded a working
platform and supported headstock formwork. Along with detailed structural design,
RBG developed and documented a full installation, dismantling and lifting sequence,
with safe working facilitated by considered detailing
