At Robert Bird Group we are exceptionally proud to invest in the next generation of engineers through our undergraduate and graduate programs. We recently sat down with Chloe Freiha to ask her about her experience as a Graduate Structural Engineer at our Sydney office. For Chloe, joining Robert Bird Group marked the beginning of a graduate experience defined by collaboration, support and hands‑on learning.
Chloe joined the business after completing a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) at the University of Sydney. She shares that what first attracted her to RBG wasn’t just the projects, it was the people.
“Everyone I met during the recruitment process was so warm, welcoming and genuine. Since starting, I’ve seen those same qualities carried through by everyone in the office.”
Starting a graduate role can be daunting, but Chloe says the culture of support at RBG made all the difference.
“There was always someone willing to help, no matter the question and the work was engaging right from the start.”
Through close collaboration with senior engineers and peers alike, Chloe was encouraged to ask questions, build confidence, and take ownership of her work as her skills developed. Chloe’s day‑to‑day work has evolved significantly since joining RBG. Her role typically involves responding to client requests, developing engineering solutions, and refining designs. One project in particular has shaped her early career.
“The first project I worked on involved both an existing structure and a new build. It gave me invaluable insight into the different challenges each presents – especially the risk, assumptions and unknowns that come with existing structures. I learnt how structural systems behave and how to justify solutions responsibly. It’s rare to get that level of exposure so early, and I feel RBG genuinely provides these opportunities for early‑career development.”
A strong mentoring network has been central to Chloe’s growth. She credits both her senior engineer and her mentor through the Graduate Development Program for shaping her confidence and capability.
“My senior engineer took the time to explain first principles, which is critical for long‑term growth in structural engineering. He supported me on site and in the office, helping me build confidence to eventually manage tasks independently.”
Her mentor, based outside the Sydney office, provided an additional layer of support.
“Having someone external to the office was incredibly valuable. We built a great bond, and she was always available to listen and offer advice.”
What has surprised Chloe most about working at RBG is the breadth of opportunity available to graduates.
“RBG delivers the perfect scale of projects, allowing graduates to be involved across multiple design aspects of a building. I enjoy working in small teams of engineers where we can bounce ideas off each other and support one another in delivering high‑quality outcomes.”
For students and graduates considering RBG, Chloe’s advice is clear:
“It’s an opportunity you don’t want to miss. RBG is the perfect environment to develop skills quickly, to a high standard within the industry. The senior engineers are very experienced and support the team to deliver efficiently and confidently.”
