Cross River Rail’s Woolloongabba Station

Engineering Excellence in Action

Exciting progress continues at Woolloongabba Station, one of the flagship sites of Queensland’s transformative Cross River Rail Tunnel and Stations project. Robert Bird Group is proud to have delivered structural, civil, and construction engineering services for this iconic development.

The Canopy – Where Engineering Meets Architecture

The station’s striking canopy is now taking shape, with extensive cladding installed. This architectural centrepiece showcases some of the most intricate engineering on the project, including:

  • Perimeter V-columns supporting the canopy from a suspended structure above the station cavern
  • A clear internal span over vertical transport shafts
  • A long, tapered cantilevered edge forming the dramatic fascia
  • An intricate coffered ceiling system that conceals structural elements while achieving architectural intent

To ensure performance and safety, our team collaborated with wind specialists to conduct a probabilistic wind influence study, delivering realistic loading actions. We also worked closely with architects Hassell, to design a bespoke support system for the ceiling cladding, balancing aesthetics with structural integrity.

Precision in Construction

The canopy was assembled on the ground in three sections, each weighing up to 70 tonnes. These were lifted onto temporary supports, bolted together, and then lowered onto permanent V-column supports. Working alongside the CBGU JV site engineering team, RBG developed a detailed staged construction analysis involving 37 discrete stages, checking deflections, support reactions, and member stresses at every step. This ensured seamless alignment and structural integrity throughout the process.

Collaboration at Its Best

Congratulations to the CBGU JV site team for executing this complex construction flawlessly. Woolloongabba Station is a testament to how design, engineering, and construction teams can unite to overcome challenges and deliver world-class infrastructure.
