Engineering Excellence on Display in Adelaide’s Market Square Redevelopment

Robert Bird Group is proud to contribute to one of Adelaide’s most transformative infrastructure projects – the Market Square and Central Market Arcade Redevelopment – being redeveloped by City of Adelaide and ICD Property. RBG has been engaged by clients Gant and Sons and Multiplex.

Situated in the heart of the Adelaide Central Market precinct, this landmark redevelopment will expand the iconic market through the construction of a new 35-storey Market Square tower. The project will feature fresh produce outlets, retail and hospitality spaces, commercial offices, a hotel, and residential apartments, creating a vibrant mixed-use destination that will reshape the city’s urban landscape.

Our Contribution: Smart, Safe, and Sequenced

Robert Bird Group has played a pivotal role in developing safe and efficient erection methodologies for several complex structural elements across multiple stages of the project. Key highlights of our involvement include:

  • North Façade Support Steel (Stages 4 & 5):
Developed detailed erection sequencing for full-height brickwork support steel, including props, bracing, and exclusion zones. Proposed offset counterbalance frames to safely manage arch weights.
  • Southern Façade Arch (Stage 6):
Reviewed and designed the erection methodology for the large southern arch, incorporating stability checks and temporary stub columns anchored into the Level 4 slab.
  • Atrium Arches:
Engineered staged lifting sequences and bracing strategies to ensure structural stability until full integration was achieved.
  • Internal Arches:
Designed a temporary chain block anchoring system fixed to the underside of the Level 3 slab, enabling safe vertical lifting.
  • Ground Floor Mezzanine Steelwork:
Reviewed erection sequencing and conducted stability checks to support safe construction practices.
  • Retail Pods (North & South):
Assessed steelwork erection, including purlins, girts, and bracing, and confirmed the suitability of crane and spider crane methodologies.

Why It Matters

Every detail – from crane methodology reviews to temporary bracing strategies – has been meticulously engineered to support the safe and successful delivery of this landmark project. Our involvement reflects Robert Bird Group’s commitment to technical excellence, collaborative problem-solving, and innovation in structural engineering.

Stay tuned for further updates as this exciting project continues to take shape.
