Janet Harvey Hall commended at the Structural Steel Design Award 2026

Robert Bird Group is proud to celebrate the success of Janet Harvey Hall at BAE Systems’ Govan shipyard, which has received a commendation at the Structural Steel Design Awards 2026.

The landmark facility forms a key part of the modernisation of BAE Systems’ shipbuilding operations on the Clyde. Measuring 170 metres long, 88 metres wide and 50 metres high, the hall provides the capacity needed to construct two Type 26 frigates side by side, supporting the future of UK naval shipbuilding.

As structural, civil, geotechnical and construction engineers on the project, Robert Bird Group played a key role in delivering the 6,000-tonne steel structure. Drawing on extensive global experience in long-span steel design, the team developed an efficient and buildable solution that balanced material optimisation with constructability while minimising temporary works requirements.

In recognising the project, the award judges highlighted both the scale of the facility and the collaborative effort required to deliver it:

“This impressive workshop, 50m high and measuring 170m x 88m, now enables BAE Systems to fabricate frigates for the Royal Navy throughout the year. Construction of such a huge structure required close collaboration between the entire team, enabling completion within three years.”

The award reflects the commitment, expertise and partnership demonstrated by all organisations involved in the project. Robert Bird Group would like to thank McLaughlin & Harvey, Corstorphine & Wright, Severfield and BAE Systems for their collaboration in delivering this significant piece of infrastructure.

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to this outstanding achievement.
