Mohammed Kassira Wins National Australian Steel Excellence Award

We are delighted to announce that Mohammed Kassira, a Structural Engineer at our Sydney office, has been awarded the National Award in the Young Achievers category. Presented by the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) at a recent ceremony, this prestigious award recognises exceptional contributions to the steel industry by young professionals under 25. The ASI judges were impressed by Mohammed’s technical expertise, community involvement, and passion for sustainable engineering.

Since joining Robert Bird Group in 2022, Mohammed has made significant contributions to some complex and challenging projects, demonstrating leadership in project management, dedication to sustainability, and commitment to continuous learning and professional growth. He has played a key role in the successful delivery of:

  • Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport (SSTOM): Mohammed completed the analysis and design of the foundation slab for SMF Maintenance and Admin Building, a 180m-long by 110m-wide steel and steel composite structure and made key contributions to the design of the above-ground structure.
  • Seven Hills High School VET Facility: Mohammed was heavily involved in this project from design through to completion, acting as the main point of contact for the contractor during the construction phase, completing design and documentation, and conducting site inspections.
  • Crows Nest Station: Mohammed’s involvement began with responding to contractor RFIs and reviewing shop drawings, and eventually he took on additional responsibilities, including coordinating with Architects, Sydney Metro and other disciplines to provide updates and issue drawings.

Beyond his technical abilities, Mohammed has demonstrated a commitment to giving back to the community. As a member of Engineers Australia, he volunteers for programs like Engineers in Schools, inspiring young people to pursue careers in STEM. His sense of responsibility to promote sustainability is evident in his designs, where he prioritises efficient material use and aims to reduce embodied carbon whenever possible.

We are incredibly proud of Mohammed and look forward to seeing him continue to grow and make outstanding contributions to the industry. His dedication to engineering, mentoring the next generation, and addressing sustainability challenges makes him a worthy recipient of this award.

Congratulations, Mohammed, on this fantastic achievement, and thank you to the Australian Steel Institute for recognising his exceptional work.
