For Robert Bird Group (RBG) and sister company SMEC it was a proud moment to see crowds utilising the new Birrarung Marr precinct throughout the Australian Open.
Appointed by the City of Melbourne and working alongside its technical review team, SMEC and RBG undertook a multidisciplinary design review of the Birrarung Marr construction package delivered by Symal and Wamarra. This civic and cultural precinct boldly celebrates Aboriginal culture and Melbourne’s ecology.
Our role provided the City with an added layer of technical assurance, confirming that designs aligned to the project vision and requirements. Our independent expertise covered civil, structural, geotechnical, flood and hydrology, environmental, ecology and accessibility. This included:
- Reviewing design documentation for technical quality, constructability and safety.
- Ensuring designs met the City’s sustainability, accessibility and community goals.
- Providing advice on flood resilience and slope stability.
- Supporting the smooth transition from design into construction.
As the first stage in City of Melbourne’s Greenline Project, Birrarung Marr provides the gateway for future stages, reimagining the waterside edge through a series of boardwalks and an active river frontage.
