Te Pae, Christchurch Convention Centre, is a new world-class purpose-built gathering place in Christchurch, New Zealand. It features a 1,400-seat auditorium, an exhibition hall, and meeting and banquet rooms. The project, which was completed in 2020, came as part of the city’s rebuild and regeneration following the devastating earthquakes in 2011.

Robert Bird Group was engaged by CPB Contractors to provide specialist construction engineering support and a staged erection analysis for the assessment and planning of the construction sequence, which was followed by multiple temporary works design packages across the course of the project.

The structure’s complex geometry and large steel elements resulted in a challenging build, with steel truss lifts of up to 50t and the requirement for critical stability in an earthquake-prone environment. Our specialist expertise in seismic design and temporary works engineering facilitated considerable construction efficiency and ensured stage-by-stage stability of the permanent works in the temporary state.
