Project Description
The Jeddah Formula One Performance Arena plays host to a number of concerts and events during the week of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Set on a site of around nine hectares, the arena features a two-level, 5,000-capacity VIP stand, 1,600m2 main performance stage with display walls up to 20 metres high, hardstand capable of supporting 15,000 standing patrons, 12m-high lighting control towers, over 500 metres of in-ground utilities trenching, over 1,000m of perimeter fencing, and feature entry and exit gates constructed from steel and stacked shipping containers.
RBG’s Role
The project involved the construction of a number of temporary buildings, including:
- performance stages up to 12 metres high and over 40 metres long
- grandstand seating for circa 1,000 people
- food and beverage outlets
- VIP terrace areas
- Perimeter fences/barriers.
The scope of works also included civil engineering including:
- Earthworks, including trenching
- Drainage and flood mitigation
- Pavements
- Utilities distribution.
The delivery schedule for the major event installations was less than three weeks, making engineering assessments and decision-making critical to on-time project delivery.
Project Challenges
RBG’s Dubai and New York City offices provided 24-hour responsiveness to the on-site design and erection teams, and the contractor’s technical team in Germany.
RBG developed the performance briefs for all event installations and certified the event as “safe to open” prior to gate opening.
