Roma Street Station

Project Description

Roma Street is set to become Brisbane’s ‘Grand Central’ with the addition of the Cross River Rail (CRR) underground station, providing connections to the existing suburban bus and rail networks, the Brisbane Metro, and regional and interstate bus and train services. The station precinct will be Brisbane’s key arrival point for the State’s leading cultural, tourism, and entertainment destinations, while also expanding the western gateway to the Central Business District (CBD). The station will be located 27 meters below ground, with 220-meter-long platforms, and will offer quick access to the RNA precinct, connecting passengers to Albert Street in under 3 minutes.

Project Challenges

Robert Bird Group provided Structural, Civil, and Construction Engineering services for both permanent and temporary works. Our permanent works included the design of the mined cavern internal structures, the station entrance building, and canopies. Temporary works covered initial retention, civil site establishment, managing predicted effects, underpinning, demolition methodology, pedestrian staging, and other critical elements.

Added Value

We provided effective structural and civil engineering solutions that satisfied the architectural intent, services requirements, durability and security brief, particularly in relation to assessment for blast resistance. Our construction-staged analysis for the main entry canopy steelwork enabled maximum construction efficiency and helped to overcome site constraints and limitations.
