Melbourne Key People; setting the standard for the Southern state.

The success of Robert Bird Group in the Southern Region is a tribute to the Melbourne office, to a dedicated team of professionals whose passion and perseverance has helped drive business growth over the 23 years the office has been in operation. To all our support staff, including the Administration team, to IT, People and Culture, Commercial and Legal Support, to our Engineers and leaders, thank you for your invaluable contributions to the business, without which we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Special mention to Gavin Mcaulay, John Bambino, Darry Horan, Silas Warhurst, Andrew Jeanes, Michael Grey, and Damien Crawford who have, and continue to be, vital players in the Southern Region, as well as the Virtual Design and Construction team, whose industry-leading visualisation works have accelerated RBG’s service offering from the local Melbourne office and across the globe.

Gavin Mcaulay, Operations Director (East)
With over 28 years’ experience in structural engineering, Gavin joined RBG in the 1980s and has since completed a variety of signature projects across Australia, including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth, as well as Asia. He has acted as Structural Project Director on signature residential, commercial, retail, industrial, infrastructure, and health projects up to $1 billion in value. Gavin’s expertise also includes the design and detailing of tall buildings in active seismic zones and multi-storey steel structures. Trusted by clients and colleagues for dependable project leadership and delivery to program, by 2007 Gavin was both General Manager of Victoria and Western Australia, and in 2017 Gavin was promoted to Operations Director, Australia, leading four business units and over 300 staff.

John Bambino, General Manager (Southern Region)
John first joined RBG in 2002 and currently holds the position of General Manager (Southern Region) which he has held since 2012. Over the past 30 years John has worked on a variety of building projects ranging from $1mil to over $1billion in total project value, including medium to high-rise residential projects up to 108 storeys, specialised modular apartment systems, such as Unitised Building and CLT (Cross Laminated Timber), commercial, retail, recreational, health, industrial, R&D, educational and government projects with extensive experience in the design, management, and onsite supervision. John strives to achieve the best outcome for clients and works collaboratively with the client project team and builders embracing and promoting the company’s embedded ethos.

Darryl Horan, Senior Associate (Civil)
Darryl helped establish a local civil engineering team in Melbourne when he first joined RBG in 2005. Darryl has over 25 years’ experience in land development including design, construction supervision, contract administration and project management for civil and infrastructure works in New Zealand, England, and Australia. As the main person responsible for delivering civil engineering services from the Melbourne office, Darryl manages and carries out civil engineering services associated with a variety of projects across a broad range of sectors.

Silas Warhurst, Construction Engineering Manager
Being with RBG since 2007, Silas manages the Construction Engineering division of RBG’s Southern Region. Silas specialises in the provision of value engineering, construction sequence, construction methodology, and temporary works designs for complex projects. Silas also specialises in the design and construction of complex structures including stadia and long-span steel structures. A client-focused approach and emphasis on the constructability of design are central to Silas’ design philosophy.

Andrew Jeanes, Principal
Andrew joined RBG in 2007 and has over 20 years structural engineering experience including structural analysis, design, forensic investigation, remedial works and site-based design/co-ordination roles for civil infrastructure projects, hi-rise, long-spanning steel (public assembly) structures, mining projects, industrial and heritage buildings. Andrew currently leads the Construction Engineering infrastructure team in the Melbourne office where his main focus is assisting contractors to develop and implement innovative construction methodologies to allow the safe and efficient delivery of complex projects, the design of complex temporary works systems and the assessment, temporary support and remediation of existing structures.

Michael Grey, Operations Manager (Southern Region)
Michael joined the Melbourne team in 2008 and has over 26 years’ experience as a Structural Engineer. He currently holds the position of Operations Manager (Southern Region). Michael has worked on a variety building projects value ranging from $1million to $1billion and has a passion for Design Leadership. He believes the engineer’s role is to deliver value through finding innovative solutions that efficiently accommodate the demands of gravity, wind, and construction. Since joining RBG Michael has been responsible for the design and tender preparation management for several building projects in various sectors including, residential, commercial, retail, educational, government, hospitality, agribusiness, aged and childcare, industrial, cyclonic, and non-cyclonic design and construction techniques.

Damien Crawford, Infrastructure Director (East)
Damien joined RBG in 2017 with a breadth of experience across transport, water, energy, and mining projects, having worked as a consultant and on the client-side of developments in Australia and the UK. As a Project Director, Damien has formed and lead multidisciplinary teams on the planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning of major projects. Damien has been instrumental to RBG’s growth in the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors.
