Robert Bird Group Commits to Science Based Targets Initiative for Climate Action

In response to the urgent call for climate action, Robert Bird Group has made a commitment to combat climate change. The most recent climate science from the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), characterised by the UN as a “code red for humanity,” underscores that while limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C remains possible, we are dangerously close to that threshold and require aggressive decarbonisation across all industries to successfully limit global temperature increases.

Our commitment stems from recognition of the need for rapid and substantial reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We are determined to play our part in halving global emissions before 2030 and achieving net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050, aligning with the targets set forth in the Paris Agreement.

To this end, Robert Bird Group has set forth a comprehensive strategy with clear targets and timelines. Our near-term targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), ensuring alignment with climate science and best practices. By 2030, we aim to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% from our 2021 base year, focused on direct emissions reductions (decarbonisation). Additionally, we are committed to transitioning to 100% renewable electricity for our operations by 2030, a significant leap from our starting point of 0% in 2021. This substantial increase in renewable energy sourcing will not only reduce our carbon footprint but also contribute to the growing momentum towards a clean energy future.

Furthermore, we recognise the importance of addressing scope 3 emissions, which account for a significant portion of Robert Bird Group’s carbon footprint. By targeting a 42% reduction in absolute scope 3 emissions by 2030, we are taking proactive steps to drive carbon reductions across the industry value chain.

By 2050, we aim to achieve a 90% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, alongside a similar reduction in scope 3 emissions. This target reflects our commitment to driving meaningful change and transitioning towards a low-carbon economy.

As we embark on this journey towards net-zero emissions, we urge our stakeholders to join us in embracing science-based targets and committing to ambitious climate action. Together, we can rise to the challenge and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.
