David Jones Redevelopment
Project Description
This development involved the $150M upgrade of the Elizabeth Street store to re-establish the 1920’s building as David Jones flagship store. The refurbishment includes a complete upgrade of the vertical transportation system, the metal was maintained functional throughout the entirety of the construction.
Key items of this upgrade include:
- A completely new set of passenger lifts that service the basement to level 9. The new lifts utilised the existing building shafts and required structural modifications to existing footings to accommodate them. The lifts were installed in stages to maintain the functionality of the retail store throughout construction.
- Installation of new escalators between level 7 and level 8. This involved lifting two escalators from ground level to level 7 whilst maintaining the full operation of the store below level 5. To accommodate the escalators major structural works were required. RBG was responsible for the methodology, and temporary and permanent structural engineering for this installation.
- Installation of new escalators between the ground floor and basement.
- Installation of the new stairs
- Relocation of major plant
