This development involves the $150M upgrade of the Elizabeth Street store to re-establish the 1920’s building as David  Jones flagship store. The refurbishment includes a complete upgrade of the vertical transportation system. Key items of this upgrade include:

  1. A completely new set of passenger lifts which will service Basement to Level 9. The new lifts utilise the existing building shafts and required structural modifications to existing footings to accommodate. The lifts are installed in stages to maintain the functionality of the retail store throughout construction.
  2. Installation of new escalators between Level 7 and Level 8. This involved lifting two escalators from ground level to Level 7 whilst maintaining full operation of the store below level 5. To accommodate the escalators major structural works were required. RBG was responsible for the methodology, temporary and permanent structural engineering for this installation.
  3. Installation of new escalators between Ground Floor and Basement. Stage 1 of the project is now complete with stage 2 ready to commence.
