Tweed Valley Hospital
Project Description
The new Tweed Valley Hospital site is located on the corner of Cudgen Road and Turnock Street near Kingscliff, approximately a 15min drive south of the Tweed Heads centre and the Gold Coast Airport. The building is intended to replace most of the services provided by the original Tweed Hospital on Powell Street in Tweed Heads.
Robert Bird Group was initially engaged by Lendlease to provide concept design and detailed design of early works packages in the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) stage. We were then retained by Lendlease to complete the main works design and provide construction stage services.
Added Value
Key aspects where we added value to the project include:
- Detailed vibration testing and investigations of the Blacktown Stage 2 Hospital to understand the performance of flat plate slabs (inclusive of HI fit-out) to inform the design of the Tweed structure.
- Detailed studies of a single span and cantilever options to remove up to 30 columns and piles.
- Development of various slab, beam and drop panel options using construction cost data to determine the optimal structural framing.
- Development of site re-grading options to enable the steep existing topography to be adapted to meet the agreed design constraints including retaining wall height limits and batter slope grades.
- Design of environmental solutions including stormwater quality and backfilling of an agricultural dam within an environmentally sensitive coastal wetland.
- Delivery of over 2km of internal roads designs as early works packages and external road and intersection upgrades.
