City Rail Link

Project Description

The City Rail Link (CRL) project is a multi-billion-dollar underground metro rail system beneath Auckland CBD, including two new stations, connections into existing stations at Britomart and Mt Eden, cut-and-cover construction, and bored tunnelling.

Project Challenges

Robert Bird Group provided extensive support to CPB Contractors during their bid for Phase 3, which involves constructing new stations at Aotea and Karangahape Roads, remodelling Mt Eden Station, TBM tunnelling and a multitude of peripheral works involving key services, roading and other infrastructure.

A 3D visualisation of the construction methodology was developed by Robert Bird Group alongside Construction Engineering design for the tender.

Link Alliance (Downer and Vinci), the successful tenderer, subsequently engaged Robert Bird Group for Construction Engineering services to facilitate enabling works, demolition, and the new build. We have produced numerous designs for retaining walls and bespoke temporary works, including rail corridor works and a unique system to support a critical buried water main and protect it from ground movements resulting from tunnelling works. These deliverables have required careful consideration of the construction methodology to ensure efficient, buildable, and safe designs.
