Cross River Rail

Project Description

Cross River Rail is a transformative 10.2-kilometre rail project designed to enhance public transport in Brisbane by connecting Dutton Park and Bowen Hills with a 5.9-kilometre twin tunnel beneath the Brisbane River and the CBD. This project aims to alleviate congestion and improve access to key locations, supporting economic growth and community connectivity.
Robert Bird Group is providing structural, civil, and construction engineering services to the Pulse Consortium (CPB, Bam, Ghella, UGL Joint Venture) with our contributions encompassing the structural design of four high-capacity underground stations at Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, and Roma Street, as well as the new surface station at Dutton Park, the Southern Tunnel Portal structure at Dutton Park, the Northern Tunnel Portal at Normanby, and a cable-stayed pedestrian bridge linking the Princess Alexandra Hospital and Boggo Road Station.
Project Challenges
The project presents several challenges, including the construction of a tunnel from the southern portal near Dutton Park Station, under the Brisbane River and CBD, to a northern portal beyond Normanby. Additional complexities involve the design and construction of four new underground stations, tunnel portals, dive structures, and all associated mechanical, electrical, and safety systems, including vertical transportation for passengers at the underground stations. Furthermore, considerations for tunnel track work, traction power systems, and rail operation and control infrastructure are critical to the project's success.

Added Value

Robert Bird Group brings significant value to the Cross River Rail project through our unique "design for delivery" approach, which leverages our expertise in structural engineering and extensive experience with underground rail infrastructure projects in Sydney and London. Our strong background in construction engineering and temporary works enables us to collaborate effectively with contractors, while our in-depth knowledge of the Brisbane construction market and the specific station sites enhances our ability to deliver successful outcomes.
Sustainable Methodologies and Outcomes
Cross River Rail aims for an ‘Excellent’ rating using the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating tool (Version 1.2) for both Design and As Built stages. This rating will be achieved at both the program level and the package level for the Tunnel, Stations and Development (TSD), as well as the Rail, Integration and Systems (RIS) packages.
