New Terminal One (NTO) will be a 23-gate, state-of-the-art terminal. Sustainably designed and future focused, the terminal will feature expansive, naturally lit, public spaces, cutting edge technology, and an array of amenities, all designed to enhance the customer experience and compete with some of the highest-rated airport terminals in the world. With more than 300,000 square feet of dining, retail, lounges, and recreation space, NTO will offer passengers a uniquely New York sense of place. New Terminal One (NTO) at JFK Airport in New York City includes the demolition of existing Terminal 1 and 2, and creation of a larger international Terminal One with a new central processor building, and two piers that provide a total of 23 gates.

Key technical challenges

The project requires construction to occur around and above the existing Airtrain linking all terminals at JFK together. The site is also significantly congested, with constraints at every site boundary including airside tarmac to the south and east, main road infrastructure to the north, and water to the west. This makes construction logistics including deliveries and materials handling very challenging across the site.

Added Value

AECOM Tishman selected RBG and our REVEAL 4D VDC platform as the project construction and communication tool of choice for the project, given the complexity of the build, and the multiple interfaces between construction, and the operational airport. RBG’s VDC modelling is connected to the live project schedule, and is being used as a construction logistics clash detection tool, stakeholder communication tool, as well as a subcontractor coordination and management tool.
