New Garden Square is an urban regeneration project near the city centre of Birmingham, incorporating residential, commercial, hotel and public amenity. The scheme comprises 400 residential units arranged in three 8-12 storey buildings, 500,000 sq ft of offices in four 8-16 storey buildings, a 10 storey car park to accommodate 600 cars all linked together with a high quality public realm incorporating gardens, trees and a flexible multipurpose open space to hold events, markets and exhibitions.

The scheme achieved an outline planning consent in 2018 and is being delivered in phases commencing with the residential development to the West of the site followed by an incremental construction of the commercial buildings and public realm.

Robert Bird Group were appointed as the civil, structural and geotechnical engineers from the initial concept stage.

The initial stages of RBG’s scope was to provide engineering input to the development of the masterplan, ultimately arriving at a multi phased, mixed use solution, with flexibility to adjust for future uses to suit the changing demands of the marketplace. Structural scheme designs were prepared for all buildings including a variety of framing options for the commercial buildings, again providing flexibility for changing market trends in the future.

The Civil Engineering scope included a site wide cut and fill analysis, landform modelling, vehicular routing, SuDS and drainage. In accordance with the proposed phasing, the earthworks will be optimised to minimise waste and double handling, with a SuDS masterplan strategy to deliver reduced run-off for each phase of the project, protecting the existing infrastructure during the construction phases.

An exemplar SuDS scheme will be delivered as part of Birmingham City Council’s key objectives for the development, utilising not only reduce discharge rates, attenuation, but also surface features including ponds, swales, infiltration and permeable surfaces to control run-off.
