Waikawa Marina Extension

Project Description

The Waikawa Marina Extension 'Waikawa North West' is a new 250 berth marina, completed in 2023. RBG supported Athfield Architects in the structural design of three land-side buildings and the feature balustrade on the Northern Breakwater structure.

Project Challenges

The engineering scope included specific engineering design of three amenities buildings, primarily in timber. RBG worked with AAL to develop clean and simple
detailing, and to ensure structural durability of the buildings in the sea spray environment. RBG also assisted in the design of a bespoke balustrade for the Northern Breakwater structure. This balustrade was constructed of Accoya timber and aluminium metalwork
components. The balustrade was split into modules to match the precast deck panels. This was done to ensure the balustrade is compatible with the articulated pier, and to
simplify construction, enable prefabrication, reducing work over the water. Reports from site were that the balustrade was installed far quicker than expected.
