The Waikawa Marina Extension ‘Waikawa North West’ is a new 250 berth marina, completed in 2023. RBG supported Athfield Architects in the structural design of three land-side buildings and the feature balustrade on the Northern Breakwater structure.

Key technical challenges

The engineering scope included specific engineering design of three amenities buildings, primarily in timber. RBG worked with AAL to develop clean and simple detailing, and to ensure structural durability of the buildings in the sea spray environment.

RBG also assisted in the design of a bespoke balustrade for the Northern Breakwater structure. This balustrade was constructed of Accoya timber and aluminium metalwork components. The balustrade was split into modules to match the precast deck panels. This was done to ensure the balustrade is compatible with the articulated pier, and to simplify construction, enable prefabrication, reducing work over the water. Reports from site were that the balustrade was installed far quicker than expected.

Added Value

RBG advised on structural materials and construction to maximise durability. We applied our knowledge of timber construction to ensure simple and constructable building forms. We were able to develop resilient structures that met all aspects of the architectural intent.

Applying our construction and modular knowledge to the balustrade structure we provided a compatible and constructible balustrade system. The modular solution improved construction speed and safety, with safety improvements that will continue to benefit the owner during future maintenance.

Sustainable Methodologies and Outcomes

The project was designed primarily in timber. Materials chosen are expected to be durable for the marine environment – requiring less maintenance and replacement during the life of the marina.
