Robert Bird Group RBG proudly joined the wider SJ Group at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2025 International Conference in Toronto, held from 6–9 October. As a sponsor and active participant, RBG showcased its commitment to engineering excellence, sustainability, and urban innovation on the global stage.
This year’s conference theme, ‘From the Ground Up: Tall Buildings and City-Making’, resonated deeply with RBG’s mission to create structures that not only reach new heights but also enrich the public realm and foster vibrant, connected communities.
Award-Winning Projects
Merdeka 118 was awarded Best Tall Building (Height: 300m+). RBG were proud to be the structural engineers alongside Leslie E. Robertson Associates on this iconic project.
- Merdeka 118, Kuala Lumpur
Best Tall Building by Region – Asia
Best Tall Building by Height (300m+)
Standing at 678.9m, this is the second tallest building in the world.
RBG also celebrated three other awards of excellence wins at the CTBUH Awards, reflecting the ingenuity and dedication of its global teams:
- Queen’s Wharf, Brisbane
Best Tall Building by Region – Oceania
Best Tall Building by Height (200–299m)
A transformative mixed-use precinct featuring four towers and three Sky Decks suspended over 100m above street level. RBG’s sustainable engineering reduced material usage through optimised column grids and refined concrete mixes. - 8 Phillip Street, Parramatta
Construction Award
A 56-storey development with a striking cantilever over a heritage church. RBG’s innovative construction methodology preserved the façade while enabling deep excavation. - 21 Moorfields, London
Best Tall Building by Region – Europe
Built above Moorgate Underground Station, this 17-storey commercial tower overcame complex constraints with a superstructure of mega-arches and an externally expressed dia-grid.
RBG Thought Leadership at CTBUH
Beyond the awards, RBG team members played key roles in shaping the future of tall buildings:
- Jason Langer (Managing Director – USA) led a workshop on Circular Economy Design, exploring sustainable strategies from recycling to re-use.
- George Andrianakos (Executive Director – ANZ) served as a juror for the Best Tall Building Oceania category.
- Nick Doyle (Senior Associate) presented Queen’s Wharf alongside Cottee Parker Architects.
- Simon Cloherty (Operations Director – Europe) represented RBG’s European operations, including the award-winning 21 Moorfields.
A Global Celebration of Innovation
“These awards reflect the dedication, creativity, and technical excellence of our teams across the globe,” said Ben Ringrose, Director, Clients & Markets and Major Projects (ANZ). “We’re proud to help shape skylines and communities for generations to come.”
RBG’s presence at CTBUH 2025 underscores its role as a global leader in engineering innovation and sustainable urban development.
